On Sunday (Manila time), they will try to knock each other out in a fight to be watched by millions around the globe.
Reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Pacquiao will attempt to prove that he is, indeed, the king of the 147-pound division.
Mosley, on the other hand, will try to show to naysayers that at 39 years old, he still has what it takes to become a world champion.
ABS-CBN News.com sat down with ANC Hard Ball’s Bill Velasco, Boyet Sison and Boom Gonzales, and veteran boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz for a head-to-head comparison of the two warriors.
We asked them about Pacquiao’s advantages and disadvantages against Mosley in terms of boxing skills, punching power, speed, durability, stamina, experience and corner.
BOXING SKILLS
Velasco: Napakaganda ng defense ni Manny. Secondly, his footwork is really amazing. He showed this ever since the Oscar de la Hoya fight. He was able to escape from being pinned to the ropes. He'll be able to implement this strategy.
Nathanielsz: Pacquiao moves very well, head movements, in and out. His punches comes from every angle. He’s slightly ahead of Shane Mosley. Sugar Shane has the skills but diminished with age. He’s 39, he’ll be 40 in September, so comparatively, Pacquiao has the advantage.
Gonzales: Si Manny, every time he goes to a fight, he offers something new. Whether it’s a defensive movement at some point, maybe a new weapon, maybe a right hand. He has better footwork... I would give the edge to Manny, we’ve already seen what Sugar Shane’s capable of, and that’s pretty much it na, eh.
Sison: In the past, Pacquiao was mostly like a wild bull coming out of the gate and let all hell break loose. Now he has become methodical. He has learned the art of studying his opponent as the game goes on. He has learned to control emotionally how he is as a fighter as the fight goes on.
PUNCHING POWER
Velasco: In terms of punching power, I would say it’s somewhat even. Pero the defining factor there would be the hand speed of Manny. Shane Mosley is pretty old compared to Manny, and has not been impressive in his last 3 fights. The fear that most people would have in this bout is that kahit malakas pang sumuntok si Mosley, if your target is no longer there, bale wala rin.
Nathanielsz: That really is Manny Pacquiao’s advantage because he’s proven from time and time again he’s got punching power in both hands. He originally has his left straight, but now he's got the right hook to the body, probably stronger than his left. Sugar Shane Mosley basically is strong with the right hand going down. But then again he has slowed down. To me, your power is accentuated by your speed.
Gonzales: When it comes to punching power, definitely Mosley is strong. He has fought tough boxers of his league, so hindi rin biro. Manny Pacquiao at this weight class (welterweight), he’s proven that he can box with them, he can box with the [Miguel] Cottos, [Antonio] Margaritos, [Joshua] Clotteys. But he has shown also that he has problems putting them down, putting them away. Kasi these are legitimate welterweight fighters.
SPEED
Nathanielsz: Mosley had that advantage before, years ago. As a lightweight, he’s really quick but not any longer. Now, he’s more deliberate. He puts his body behind his punches. He nearly doesn’t have the speed he has before. And Pacquiao is the fastest man in boxing today.
Gonzales: I still think Manny has this factor. Ang maganda kay Manny, ‘yung sa bilis niya, hindi nawawala ang lakas. Hindi ito ‘yung pitter-patter punches. There’s power in every punch, that’s why I think that’s an advantage for Manny.
Sison: Speed is Manny's. But speed is nothing if the person receiving the punch can take it.
DURABILITY
Velasco: That for me would be the only question mark kay Mannym because if you remember, he got hurt in his fight against Antonio Margarito, and honestly, Margarito was only fighting about 80% because it was a catch weight fight (150 pounds). In this case, Mosley would also be a durable fighter. If he can take punches from Manny in the first 4 rounds, he may last the fight. Ang takot ko lang d’yan if Manny allows himself to get hit.
Nathanielsz: One thing you got to say about Sugar Shane Mosley is his jaw is strong. He’s never been knocked out. He can take a punch. Pacquiao has been vulnerable when he’s young, 17 or so. But after that, he’s settled down. But you know, when Filipinos mature, their jaws gets stronger. Sometimes Pacquiao’s raw courage overcomes the pain, and that’s how he takes punches. Both fighters can take punches.
Gonzales: Dito ako may kaunting kaba. Kasi si Manny nga in the last few fights, he shows, actually indulgences the audience, you know. Pinapakita niya na kaya niyang tanggapin. Ipinakita niya ito kay Cotto, kay Clottey, lalo na kay Margarito. I think when you talk about the body, maybe Mosley has the advantage here in terms of durability. Pero kung pahabaan ng laban ‘yan, ‘yung durability ni Mosley maybe suspect.
Sison: Sa akin, mas matibay 'yung panga ni Mosley, marami nang tinanggap na tama yan, eh. Pero ‘yun nga ang labanan ngayon eh, how many punches will each be able to land on the chin.
STAMINA
Velasco: No question, it’s Manny’s advantage especially considering he’s been tested in his last couple of fights. You look at the Cotto fight, then the Clottey fight and then Margarito, mahabang distansya ang nilakad niyan, not early knockouts.
Nathanielsz: Being the younger man, and the fact that he’s trained for 2 months, very rigorous training, strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza has obviously done tremendous work. Stamina-wise, he should prevail over Mosley because he’s the younger man.
EXPERIENCE
Velasco: If you look naman sa experience, Shane Mosley has a lot of experience because he’s older and he fought a lot of fights at that class. But if you consider all of the names of Pacquiao has fought in many different with divisions, the 3 fights against Erik Morales, the 2 against [Juan Manuel] Marquez and all the other fights on his way moving up, the titles he collected, it could still be Manny’s advantage.
Nathanielsz: “Sugar” Shane Mosley is the more experienced fighter because he’s been longer in the business. But Pacquiao has gained his experience through different situations, especially through fighting bigger men. I think it’s about even.
Gonzales: Just in terms of length of time, it can be the experience factor for Mosley. Pero ‘yung mga quality fighters, may laban naman si Pacquiao.
CORNER
Velasco: In Mosley’s last 15 fights, he’s lost 6 and drawn 1 after winning 38 in a row. So if you look at his record recently, aside from his surprise knockout of Margarito, wala talaga pang maipagmamalaki in the last couple of years. That tells me that strategy is lacking, not maximizing his ability. I honestly think Freddie Roach is the best in the business, and Alex Ariza is the best in conditioning. So that goes to Manny Pacquiao.
Nathanielsz: They have 2 different styles, Naazim Richardson is an excellent trainer, and they have a very good relationship with Sugar Shane Mosley like Freddie Roach and Pacquiao. Freddie Roach has a slight edge because he and Pacquiao communicate extremely well and they trust well implicitly.
Gonzales: Naazim is a great, great trainer, but it’s the combination of Freddie and Manny that does the trick. I read an article that hands down, they’re the best boxer-trainer combination of all time. Freddie Roach is obviously going down in history as one of the best coaches of all time.
