Royal watcher’s the world over are buzzing with excitement at the announcement that Prince William and Kate Middleton will be married on April 29th 2011. The couple, both 28, met at St Andrews University. After years of speculation and rumours it’s now official!
The Royal Engagement was announced in the brief statement released at Clarence House. It said “The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton”.
“We are both very happy” Prince William said. He proposed to Kate in October during a holiday to Kenya. The engagement ring is very special, it was his mother’s, Princess Dianna. When asked why he chose to give Kate his mothers ring he said “Its my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement”. In traditional fashion the Prince also sought permission of Kate’s father.
Prince Charles said he was “thrilled obviously” about the engagement and suggested they had been “practicing” long enough! .Kate Middleton’s parents Michael and Carol said they were “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” by the wonderful news!. Kate’s father also said they had got to know William really well,”we all think he is wonderful and we are extremely fond of him”.
While Charles and Dianna’s story didn’t have the fairytale ending (for obvious reasons) most people believe that Kate and William’s have a much better chance. For starters Dianna was only 19 when she married Charles and Kate Middleton is 28. Who of us could honestly say we had the maturity to cope with the responsibility of Royal life at that age. Kate and William have both said they would like to learn from the mistakes of the past. What a fantastic platform to work from. As a couple it is very possible they could achieve far greater things than many Royals of the past. Of course it will be challenging and they will face many issues along the way, however many people believe they have a superior emotional intelligence to help them in the long run. The Royal Wedding 2011 is causing excitement all the way to the top!
The Queen is quoted as saying she is “absolutely delighted” for both Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the engagement marked “a great day for our country” and wished the couple a long and happy life together.
William is very protective of Kate regarding the pressures of Royal life and is quoted as saying “I want to make sure they (Kate’s family) have the best guidance and a chance to see what life has been like, in the family”. He also said their long courtship had given Kate plenty of time to “back out of it if she needed to before it all got too much”.
